BRIDGING ELECT to HOW DOES LEARNING HAPPEN

THE QUESTION?     What is the new How Does Learning Happen, document?

THE ANSWER  The How Does Learning Happen? document was created to help educators build on their foundational knowledge of the early years.

IT IS GROUNDED in new research and leading-edge practice from around the world.

IT INCORPORATES what we have learned from ELECT and how it has been applied in programs and practice across the province.

HOW CAN ECES USE IT IN EVERYDAY PRACTICE?

    BELONGING
GOAL FOR THE CHILDREN: Every child has a sense of belonging when he or she is connected to others and contributes to their world.

EXPECTATION OF THE PROGRAM: Early childhood programs cultivate authentic, caring relationships and connections to create a sense of belonging among and between children, adults, and the world around them.

ASK YOURSELF: If you make one change today to strengthen relationships in your program, what will it be? If you were to make another change tomorrow, what would it be?

    WELL-BEING
GOAL FOR THE CHILDREN: Every child is developing a sense of self, health, and well-being.

EXPECTATION OF THE PROGRAM: Early childhood programs nurture children’s healthy development and support their growing sense of self.

ASK YOURSELF: How can your program put more emphasis on outdoor exploration and play that engage the body, mind, and senses?

    ENGAGEMENT
GOAL FOR THE CHILDREN: Every child is an active and engaged learner who explores the world with body, mind, and senses.

EXPECTATION OF THE PROGRAM: Early childhood program provide environments and experiences to engage children in active, creative, and meaningful exploration, play, and inquiry.

ASK YOURSELF: Consider how the environment and experiences that you provide for children engage them. What draws them in?

    EXPRESSION
GOAL FOR THE CHILDREN: Every child is a capable communicator who expresses himself or herself in many ways.

EXPECTATION OF THE PROGRAM: Early childhood programs foster communication and expression in all forms.

ASK YOURSELF: Considering that children have “100 languages”, how many ways are there for children to express themselves in your program?
